EUROCITIES Online session - Cities leading the transition towards a sustainable EU built environment

    Organiser: Supporters

As part of Eurocities Environment Forum “People and planet for the green transition” (28-30 April), the Covenant of Mayors is hosting a session on cities leading the transition towards a sustainable EU built environment on 30 April from 09:45 to 10:45 CEST. In the context of the Covenant of Mayors increased ambition for a fairer and climate neutral Europe, buildings will remain one of the key sectors for the decarbonisation. It will be key for cities to explore how to reduce emissions across the whole lifecycle of buildings.

Through a keynote by José Pedro Sousa, Expert in the High-Level Roundtable for the New European Bauhaus, and presentations by the cities of Tampere, Stockholm and Vienna, we will discuss how pioneer cities are reducing the whole-life impact of the building sector on the environment, by increasing its circularity, and promoting bio-based materials. Followed by an interactive debate, speakers and participants will also reflect on what is needed to adopt these approaches in other cities in Europe. In particular, the session will focus on bridging the gap between EU strategies and local action to accelerate a green transition. The proposed EU ‘Renovation Wave’, the ‘EU Strategy for a Sustainable Built Environment’, and the ‘New European Bauhaus’, all part of the European Green Deal, are very important for cities, because without a deep and comprehensive renovation wave across Europe, without rethinking the purpose of buildings and without considering their whole-life impact, Europe will not be able to meet its 2030 and 2050 climate ambitions.
